On this day in music history: April 9, 1977 - “Dancing Queen” by ABBA hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week. Written by Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Stig Anderson, it will be the biggest chart single in the US for the Swedish pop quartet. Written and recorded in the Summer of 1975, Andersson and Ulvaeus will be inspired to write the song after hearing George McCrae’s “Rock Your Baby”. The song will be performed publicly on Swedish TV for the first time on June 18, 1976 before an audience that includes King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and his future queen Silvia Sommerlath. Issued as the second single from their third studio album “Arrival”, “Dancing Queen” is released as a single in the US on November 12, 1976. Entering the Hot 100 at #86 on December 11, 1976, it will take a slow and steady climb up the chart, reaching the top seventeen weeks later. The single will be a huge worldwide hit, also topping the charts in an additional thirteen countries around the world. “Dancing Queen” is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
